According to a study published on 1 September 2011 in the journal Blood, French researchers, for the first time, successfully managed to transfuse blood artificially created from stem cells.
It is from the human hematopoietic stem cells from a donor and by adding "growth factors" that researchers were able to produce billions of red blood cells for subsequent transfusion to the same donor.
According to Professor Luc Douay, who led the study at the Hopital Saint-Antoine in Paris, these results allow us to imagine the creation of artificial blood banks' medium-term "destined for human patients.
For the Professor, "the challenge now is to move to an industrial phase" that could end the crucial problem of the lack of blood donors.
